Did you ever sit down and think to yourself: What movie should I watch? The answer is The Shawshank Redemption. The story was written by Stephen King, and then Frank Darabont wrote the screenplay and directed the movie. The legendary Morgan Freeman plays Red, and Tim Robbins plays Andy Dufresne. They did an amazing job playing the role that they were supposed to. In this movie, you will be able to see how much of an impact one person can make. How one person showed an inmate that no one should let the prison get to you. Andy Dufresne proved to Red that even in prison you should have hope and dreams for a better future, that way you don’t forget who you are, who you were.

Andy needed something, and he heard of a man that can get things. He needed a rock hammer, and he knew that he would be able to get one from Red, so that’s who he went to talk to. “It wasn’t until a month went by that he finally opened up his mouth to say more than two words to somebody. As it turned out, that somebody was me” (The Shawshank Redemption). Andy is the kind of man that needs to do something with his life. Sitting in jail is constricting him because there isn’t anything that he can do there to be able to enjoy life. This is the reason why Andy requested a rock hammer from Red. Andy needed something that he could grasp onto from his last life so that he wouldn’t forget who he is.
One day while Red and Andy and a few other inmates were tarring the roof, Andy overheard the captain of the prison guards talking about some financial problems. Andy lets him know that he is able to help, and for payment, asks for three cold beers for each of the workers working on the roof.
“We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders and felt like free men. Hell, we could have been tarring the roof of one of our own houses. We were the Lords of all Creation. An important theme in Frank Darabont’s film The Shawshank Redemption is hope. The film demonstrates that hope is a good thing and shows the consequences in having and lacking hope. It is important that Darabont’s film showed the theme of hope as it us also important in our lives today because having or lacking in hope affects people personally, nationally and worldwide. In our everyday lives we are presented with cases of people having hope through our own or someone we knows personal experiences and on the news. He managed to free himself after amputating his own arm. As a result of his hope Aron Ralstonsurvived. From learning about Aron’s and is experience, we see that in dangerous or life threatening situations hope is crucial and essential, as with hope comes the will to live. Therefore hope is a good thing to have in our lives as it can help save individuals.

An example of how hope can affect a nation is the Christchurch earthquakes in New Zealand. IN September 2010 Christchurch was struck by a strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale, leaving thousands of residents with injuries, without homes and hundreds of casualties. These people demonstrated hope, as although the region is still recovering and receiving numerous after shocks weekly, they still are remaining positive and hopeful. As a consequence of the people of Christchurch’s hope, people all around the world and New Zealand are wiling to give aid to e people affected by the earthquakes . Also because of Christchurch residents hope that the earthquakes will stop, the majority of them have chosen to stay in the region and help recover their city. With hope comes positivity. Although the people of Christchurch have been affected terribly by the earthquakes they are still positive because of their hope. This shows how hope can be a good and important thing for nations today to have.
